Whitney Houston dies at 48

Whitney Houston

It?s no secret she?s had a rough go of it in recent years, and Whitney Houston has died of undisclosed causes, says her publicist Kristen Foster. With her fans and friends understandably devastated by the news, details available thus far tell that the "I Will Always Love You" singer was found unresponsive in her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel on Saturday (February 11). With paramedica arriving within minutes, Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55PM with a full investigation already underway - though there are said to be no signs of foul play. According to TMZ, a search of the Beverly Hilton Hotel room in which the 48-year-old was staying found no illegal drugs, though prescription medications were located. TMZ adds that there's a chance Miss Houston died from drowning in the bathtub, but since her body was removed from the water before EMTs arrived the conclusive determination must await an autopsy. Below are pictures from the scene at the Beverly Hilton Hotel after Whitney Houston's passing (February 11). [gallery=817]

Bikini Babe Kate Hudson & Matt Bellamy: Honeymooning in Cancun?

Flaunting her toned beach bod along the south of the border shoreline, Kate Hudson enjoyed a loved up Cancun getaway with Matthew Bellamy over the St. Patrick's Day weekend (March 16).

The 32-year-old actress rocked a skimpy black and white striped bikini as she and the Muse rocker mate swam in the Caribbean Sea waters and shared kisses while perched on the sandy coastal terrain.

Making the sighting quite intriguing, Kate and Matthew's Mexican holiday may actually be a honeymoon - as reports tell that Hudson's mom, Goldie Hawn, referred to the pair as "married" in a slip-up during a recent interview.

Talking to Britain's ES magazine, Hawn said, "My kids are fantastic with their children, they have an amazing parental ethic and I'm very proud of them for that."

"When my daughter Kate married an English rock star it didn't worry me; all that matters (is) that the relationship is a good one. What people do is not necessarily who they are," Goldie added.

At the current time, there's no confirmation of the marriage by either Hudson, nor Bellamy's reps.

Yelawolf Trying To 'Get Right' After Spleen Injury

'He just had to cancel a couple of shows just so he could get right,' Royce da 5'9" tells MTV News in Austin, Texas before SXSW Shady showcase.

There's a Shady party scheduled to go down at SXSW on Friday night (March 16), but sadly Yelawolf will not be performing with his labelmates 50 Cent and Slaughterhouse.

The Gadsden, Alabama, MC was hospitalized March 2 with an injury to his spleen after a stage-diving accident in Madison, Wisconsin.

"I have [spoken] to him, I spoke to him, I called him and checked on him. I think he stage-dove or something like that," Royce da 5'9" told MTV News of Yela's status when we caught up with the MC in Austin, Texas. "I don't know if people know this because Yelawolf is such a mild-mannered, laid-back kinda guy, but he gets real rowdy onstage and he doesn't mind putting his physical health in danger as well as the fans', which makes for a greater show."

No doubt, Yela has earned a reputation as an energetic performer, mixing both rap and punk-rock elements into his stage show. Unfortunately, after the Wisconsin show, doctors recommended he cancel a number of dates, including a concert at Saint Andrew's Hall in label boss Eminem's native Detroit and, of course, tonight's SXSW showcase.

Not that the Shady 2.0 show will be without highlights. 50 Cent is set to perform his 2003 classic debut, Get Rich or Die Tryin', in its entirety and Slaughterhouse will take the stage in what is expected to be a lyrical free-for-all. Big K.R.I.T., Schoolboy Q, Action Bronson and XXL freshman Don Trip are also scheduled to hit the stage.

As far as Catfish Billy, Royce expects his buddy to make a full recovery. "He's well, he's doing well," he said, "He just had to cancel a couple of shows just so he could get right."

SXSW is under way in Austin, Texas, and MTV News has you covered with all of the action. From the Woodies on March 15 to behind-the-scenes scoop on festival showcases from Lil Wayne, T.I., 50 Cent and many more, stick with us for unprecedented access!

How precious!  Christina Milian's little girl is growing up in front our eyes.  Little Violet celebrated her 2nd birthday at The Children’s Place in L.A. The company set up an adorable little girls and boys clothing boutique inside the party featuring the “Spring Dressy” collection. Each guest left with a gift bag containing a $75 gift card.

Also, Violet wore not one, but TWO dresses from The Children’s Place at her party.  She started out wearing a girlie ruffle floral dress, but then changed into a more glam sequin dress right before they brought out her cake!  Learning fashion from her mommy already.

Carson Daley was there as well.

So cute!

And speaking of birthday, Tichina Arnold's daughter ALIJAH KAI is 8-years-old today!  And Tichina had some fun snapping pics of her animated little one today.  Wonder where she gets that from...

Tichina tweeted: "Another B Girl pose. I swear she posed this way on her own. She's an 80's girl naturally."  Cute!

And Tia Mowry Hardrict was every bit the working mom as she snapped an Instagram pic while feeding her baby boy Cree on the set of her new movie.  She's currently filming "MistleTones" for an ABC Family Movie special in Utah.

Taylor Swift Goes Big On 'Hunger Games' Song 'Eyes Open'

Track teases soundtrack album, which drops on March 20, ahead of 'Hunger Games' release on March 23.
By Jocelyn Vena

Taylor Swift's other "Hunger Games" track, "Eyes Open," has hit the 'Net nearly a week before the official soundtrack drops.

Whereas "Safe & Sound" is sparse and gloomy, Swift's second "Hunger Games" soundtrack contribution is more epic and upbeat, at least musically. The lyrics still touch on many of the darker themes of the film, meaning that she sings about the loss of innocence and the need to stay strong in the face of adversity.

"Yesterday we were just children/ Playing soldier just pretending/ Dreaming dreams with happy endings," she sings on the track, which has been posted on Perez Hilton's website. "In backyards, waging battles with the wooden swords/ But now we've stepped into a cruel world/ Where everybody stands and keeps score."

The song is punctuated by big guitar riffs and a rock-inspired beat as Swift continues on the chorus, "Keep your eyes open/ Everybody's waiting for you to break down/ Everybody's watching to see the fallout/ Even when you're sleeping, sleeping/ Keep your eyes, eyes open."

Lyrically, many of the tributes in the Hunger Games can relate to that need to be strong, but it seems to be particularly pointed at the story's female lead, Katniss Everdeen, played by Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence, who becomes the face of revolution in the beloved franchise.

The full "Hunger Games" soundtrack drops on March 20, just days before the film opens on March 23. It features a wide array of artists, including Miranda Lambert, the Civil Wars (who also appear with Swift on "Safe & Sound"), Arcade Fire, Kid Cudi and more.

"I immediately read the book in, like, two days and fell in love with it," Swift explained about her love of all things "HG" when she sat down with MTV News during her "First" last month. "I fell in love with the characters, fell in love with the world that Suzanne Collins had created. I was just so immersed in it."

Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games."

T.I. And B.o.B Wave Grand Hustle Flag At SXSW

Grand Hustle artists were joined by Wale, Meek Mill, Curren$y at Warner Music showcase.
By Nadeska Alexis

AUSTIN, Texas — There was no shortage of options in Austin, Texas, on Thursday night if you happened to be a hip-hop fan at SXSW on the hunt for a good show. While Lil Wayne and YMCMB put their talents on display at Austin Music Hall, just five minutes down the road T.I., B.o.B, Wale, Meek Mill and Curren$y brought down the house at the Warner Sound showcase.

MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway hosted the event at La Zona Rosa, where Grand Hustle Records had a triumphant night and Maybach Music Group continued to rep their expanding roster. Curren$y, Kirko Bangz and XV got the packed house adequately warmed up for a night that easily stretched into the wee hours of Friday morning (March 16).

Grand Hustle announced their arrival with B.o.B's raucous entrance to "Beast Mode," backed by a live band. His next number, "How Bout Dat," commanded a fleet of backup dancers. He followed that with the upbeat single "Magic" off his debut album, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. The song faded into a dubstep beat, pushing the dancers front and center to showcase their moves before the venue finally went dark.

With nothing to see or hear, the crowd hung back, wondering what would be next. That would be Mr. Grand Hustle himself. "They say Grand Hustle is in the building," Tip announced over the mic, followed by a long pause before "I'm Back" came booming through the speakers.

"Rubberband Man" was a natural choice to follow, sending the crowd soaring along with "U Don't Know Me." Tip took a break only to plug his upcoming eighth album, Trouble Man, which is tentatively due out this summer, before continuing with fan favorites like "What You Know" and one of his more recent singles, "Pyro."

From there, B.o.B and T.I. continued to tag-team the set, and Tip was proud to announce that this was the first time he and his signee had "done a full show together."

Playboy Tre was on hand for "Bet I Bust." "Don't Let Me Fall" was delivered on acoustic guitar, and T.I. even threw in "Whatever You Like" to round out Bobby Ray's "Airplanes" and "Strange Clouds," the title track of his upcoming album.

It was already after midnight when MMG rappers Meek Mill, Stalley and Wale finally took the stage. Meek and Stalley were up first, with energetic singles like "I'ma Boss" aiming to keep the crowd going. Wale did his part to keep the energy alive, performing his hits "Lotus Flower Bomb" and "Slight Work" and commanding a guest appearance from Travis Porter. The D.C. rapper closed out the night with his street anthem "Bait" and the cult favorite "No Hands."

Pauly D Reflects On 'Jersey Shore' Finale

'This season, we kind of appreciated Jersey more,' he tells MTV News of season five.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

In a sea of laughs (courtesy of Vinny trying to hook up with two lesbians) and drama (including the Situation gossiping about Deena's sister's bedtime activities with his brother) on the "Jersey Shore" season finale, perhaps the biggest drama of all was caused by a prank pulled by Pauly D and Vinny.

After the crew returned from a camping trip, they found that their pals had pulled the ultimate practical joke, putting all their belongings and the house's furnishings outside. While almost everyone laughed it off, their pal the Situation didn't find it as amusing, complaining ad nauseam about the joke. "The finale's crazy because we go all out with the pranks," Pauly told MTV News about the season ender. "So me and Vinny, we're like prank-war champions. The whole house [suffers]. They appreciate it, but they get mad."

It capped off a season that was full of fun, drunken nights, as well as some real emotion, especially when Vinny left the house for a minute to deal with his anxiety issues. In the end, Pauly recalled all the laughs he shared with his roomies.

"Well, this season, we kind of appreciated Jersey more," he said. "So we took advantage of it and everything it has to offer. We were in Italy for so long [last season] that we never were away from the country for that amount of time, so you realize how much you miss gym, tan, laundry. There was no tanning beds in Italy.

"Something that surprised me? When Vinny left," he added about his buddy's short break from the house. "I never thought he would ever leave me. So he left me, but good thing we brought him back."

With season five over, it's not clear if the show will come back for a sixth season. If it does happen, Pauly D is down to hit Seaside again. "Absolutely! I'm there! I love summers on the Jersey Shore," he said. "I love it as a show, and I love it with my roommates. I wouldn't do it without [them]. I gotta do it with them. I want all of them, and I want the Jersey Shore."

Until then, fans can get their DJ Pauly D fix with his spin-off, "The Pauly D Project," kicking off on March 29, the same day as the premiere of "Punk'd." And of course, the "Shore" spin-off featuring mom-to-be Snooki and JWoww is currently in production.

FOOLISH ACTIVITIES: Reality Stars Derek J and Neffe CAUGHT UP In Hair Salon GUNFIRE Fight

Reality tv stars Derek J and Neffe (Keyshia Cole's sister) were dodging bullets recently when an angry stylist decided to bust a cap after Neffe complained about her hair! Deets inside....

Down in the ATL, Keyshia Cole's sister Neffe found out the hard way that you can't complain about a bad weave....some stylists are extra sensitive!

According to the police report, after getting a "hairdo" that she felt was a "hair-don't" at one salon, Neffe went across town to Derek J's salon so someone could fix her situation.

But when the first stylist got wind that Neffe came back complaining about the "style," he showed up with a gun!

Derek J said,

"Her (hair was) messed up to the point we didn't know what to do. So I was just like, reach out to the stylist and say 'Hey, what did you use, what did you do?" and it turned from a professional conversation to more of an argument, but we thought it was done."

But it wasn't..........

"A few hours later a gentleman shows up, the other stylist, wanting to talk and started an argument. I asked him to leave," owner Lisa McCall said.  "Before turning away, he waved the gun in my face and said, 'You don't think I will?' And I backed up," McCall said.

And then....the stylist pulled the trigger and a bullet went into a floor board!

"We knew it wasn't a good thing when he came, but we thought it was going to be a quick exchange with words and then he was going to be gone. So, nobody really knew he would pull out a gun," Derek said.

The gun-packing stylist is still on the loose but no one was injured.....thankfully!

But Derek J added that he's pissed his floor got messed up!  And he tweeted,

I want to say thank you to everyone that sent their concerns about the incident  I am ok it is just unfortunate

SXSW Film Fest Full Of Chills, Thrills And Tears Of Laughter

MTV News wraps up the highlights of the Austin, Texas, festival including our favorite celebrity interviews.
By Kara Warner

AUSTIN, Texas — Although the South by Southwest Music Festival is just getting started, the film portion of the annual music, arts and interactive gathering in Austin, Texas, is coming to an end. It was too short a trip for our tastes, but we were able to cram in an awful lot of film coverage during our time within the city limits. Before we get to the highlights from SXSW Film Fest '12, here's a compilation of our interviewees' humorous commentary regarding the best and worst things about SXSW.

"The great thing about SXSW is the proliferation of beautiful young men all over the city," deadpanned Nick Offerman. "Now that the sun's out we're going to be seeing some shirts come off. This is a modern film we've made," he said of his film, "Somebody Up There Likes Me," trying to tie it to his answer. "Nature is beautiful."

"#1: It's in Austin, that's the best," said Johnny Knoxville. "The Fest feels like it's picking up steam every year."

"There was one day where from around 11 a.m. 'til whenever I went to bed I think I had — I counted — 28 beers," "21 Jump Street" star Jonah Hill recalled of his first boozy experience at the festival a few years back. "I was never drunk, it was such a long period of time, there was a good old buzz thing going on for 20 hours."

"My favorite thing so far is waiting in line with other people," admitted "Jump Street" co-director Chris Miller. "At first it was driving me crazy, but ... you're there for an hour with people who all like the same stuff and have a much cooler conversation there than you would in a bar."

"The cons of SXSW are all the beautiful young women getting in the way of looking at all the beautiful young men," Offerman continued. "Prancing about, tossing their hair like they're all that. They're not."

With those pros and cons in mind, let's get back to our film-focused journey in Austin, which we began with the Joss Whedon-scripted, Drew Goddard-directed festival opener, "The Cabin in the Woods." Although it is a traditional horror film with "thrilling deaths," it's a crowd-pleaser nonetheless.

Then came the twisted thriller "Killer Joe," which features many an opportunity for awkward laughter and smooth-talkin' Matthew McConaughey as a killer-for-hire, followed by a surprise appearance from Mark Wahlberg during Seth MacFarlane's "A Conversation With" panel, which led to a very casual interview about Wahlberg's acting skills and falling in love with a teddy bear. After that, we walked down a dark childhood memory lane with "Nature Calls" director Todd Rohal and stars Johnny Knoxville and Rob Riggle.

We spent time with skateboarding legend Danny Way during his surprise visit to a local skate park, and tried not to laugh ourselves to tears during chats with "Small Apartments" scene-stealer Matt Lucas and deadpan comedy ace Nick Offerman when he told us the best thing about his buzzworthy film, "Somebody Up There Likes Me" is the fact that he gets naked onscreen. We're still not sure he was telling the truth, but it was hilarious nonetheless.

Our final day of film-related action involved a visit to "21 Jump Street" with stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, who revealed the project's special ties to SXSW, as well as their reactions to finally seeing the finished film with an audience.

We chatted up Fabianne Therese, the star of the recently picked-up home invasion thriller "The Aggression Scale," who accidentally put her hand through a glass window during filming and resulted in the filmmakers writing it into the script. And then we caught up with the men of "Extracted," an intriguing film about a man who invents a way to watch people's memories from inside their minds and then gets trapped within a criminal's mind.

"I think [the movie] means something to everybody," director Nir Paniry said. "To me, it's a film about regret and how one memory means something to somebody else and one memory means something to another person. Memories are not finite records, they're organic, they can be manipulated, but they're specific to the person. Your memory of something is not my memory of something."

"It's life. All these things that are universal and timeless," added star Sasha Roiz. "Trying to confront your past or changing your course of life, redemption. These two men are basically sitting in their own purgatory, one is stuck in a cell, one is stuck in the mind of another man. There all these wonderful themes that bubble to the surface.

And although it's not technically film-related, we spent some time with Lena Dunham, the star/creator/executive producer of HBO's heavily hyped new series "Girls," which she promises is grounded in reality and deals with the drama of modern romantic relationships.

All in all, our experience was fun-filled, if a tad bit exhausting. For those of you hankering to see the films in our lineup, the good news is that several of them are headed to theaters or small screens near you.

"21 Jump Street" opened everywhere Friday (March 16); "Cabin in the Woods" hits theaters April 13; "Girls" premieres on HBO April 15, followed by the DVD/Blu-Ray release of "The Aggression Scale" on May 29. Seth MacFarlane's live-action debut "Ted" hits theaters July 13.

Stick with MTV News for news about the fest's other buzzworthy entries, "Somebody Up There Likes Me," "Killer Joe" and "Extracted."

Although summer blockbuster season is still a few months away, the lucky fans making the trek to WonderCon this weekend in Anaheim, California, will be getting a very special sneak preview of a few of the summer's most-anticipated films.

The annual comic book, sci-fi and fantasy fest kicked off Friday (March 16) and continues through the weekend with an action-packed schedule of events that include panel discussions, artist meet-and-greets, costume competitions and, of course, movie previews. MTV News will be making the trek down to the Con for a full day of preview presentations and interviews with some very special guests. Here's a quick preview of what to expect from the studios and films scheduled to appear at the Anaheim Convention Center on Saturday:

20th Century Fox: "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and "Prometheus"

Fox will debut exclusive new footage and the stars and filmmakers from two of the most buzzed-about films this year at the Con. "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" is the tale of one of America's most beloved historical figures reinvented as a vampire-killer, and star Benjamin Walker, director Timur Bekmambetov and writer Seth Grahame-Smith will be on hand to discuss it. "Prometheus" marks the highly anticipated return of director Ridley Scott to his "Aliens" origins, although the extent of which we are unsure because the film is shrouded in secrecy. Sir Scott will be joined by screenwriter Damon Lindelof and stars Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron.

Universal: "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Battleship"

First-time feature director Rupert Sanders will present a never-before-seen reel of footage from "Huntsman" alongside star Charlize Theron.

"I'm going to present a piece that I've cut specifically for WonderCon, a five-minute piece that is very different from anything else that's been seen," Sanders told MTV News recently. "We made our announcements at Comic-Con and just over a year later, it's been a quick turnaround on this project, so it's going to be nice to go back to WonderCon this time and show them an original piece, tailored specifically for them."

Fans will also get an exclusive look at new footage from "Battleship," presented by director Peter Berg, Brooklyn Decker and Alexander Skarsgard.

Sony: "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Looper," and "Resident Evil: Retribution"

Sony is set to get your Spidey sense tingling with a sneak peek at new footage from director Marc Webb's interpretation of the web slinger's origins as portrayed by Andrew Garfield. Webb will be joined by star and current "it" girl Emma Stone. Fans will also receive a first look at the intriguing sci-fi thriller "Looper," in which time travel is utilized by hired killers. Writer/director Rian Johnson will make an appearance with star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays a young version of Bruce Willis' character in the film. Sony is also sending up a sneak peek of the latest installment in the "Resident Evil" franchise, "Resident Evil: Retribution," with director Paul W.S. Anderson and star Milla Jovovich.

Shailene Woodley: "Celebrity" Is a Dirty Word to Me

Even though she starred in an Oscar-nominated film (opposite George Clooney, no less!) and was nominated for a Golden Globe, Shailene Woodley doesn't consider herself a celebrity. In fact, the Hollywood newcomer thinks the term is downright offensive. "To me the C-word is 'celebrity,' the F-word is 'famous" and the S-word is 'star,'" the 20-year-old actress tells iVillage. "I despise those words. Unless you’re Tom Hanks or anyone of that caliber, I don’t think that those words should be used and applied to you."

Lady Gaga Launches Born This Way Foundation

'This is not an anti-bullying foundation; this is a youth-empowerment foundation,' Mother Monster says at Harvard launch event.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><a href="/news/articles/1677562/lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation.jhtml">Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta</a>, took over Harvard University to launch their <a href="/news/articles/1673633/lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation.jhtml"><i>Born This Way</i> Foundation</a> on Wednesday (February 29). In front of a crowd that included <a href="/news/articles/1679223/lady-gaga-oprah-winfrey-foundation.jhtml">Oprah Winfrey</a>, the New York natives kicked off their inspirational foundation, hoping to empower the youth of America. </P><P> </P><P>"I was recently with the great Gloria Steinem, who said that sometimes the only way you can get attention to a problem is to freak people out," <a href="http://act.mtv.com/posts/lady-gaga-launches-born-this-way-foundation/">Oprah said at the event</a>." 'Break the form,' she said. You have to stop playing the game in order to change the content. Lady Gaga, with her music and her message and her own story, is breaking the form, and she is changing consciousness. She says that she wasn't put on earth just to sing songs; her passion is to be that force for good. The <i>Born This Way</i> Foundation is in line with so many of my core beliefs." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga enthusiastically opened up about the foundation and what she hopes to do with it. "I just have one thing to say before we get started: We got Oprah! ... Thank you from all of us &#8212; from my entire team, from my mother, from the bottom of the hearts of so many people who believe in what we're doing today," she said, wearing a chocolate-brown gown, brown lace gloves, towering platforms and a sparkly fishnet hat. </P><P> </P><P>"I'm not here today to give you an answer. And I'm not here to tell you I can solve these problems [of bullying]. This is about transformative change in culture over a period of time. One of the most important things I wanted to share with all of you today, it's no secret I speak out against bullying. This is not an anti-bullying foundation; this is a youth-empowerment foundation," she continued. "This is about changing the climate of the school environment and not putting the power in the hands of the teachers or the government. It is about the bubble effect. I don't believe they have the answers; I believe that you do." </P><P> </P><P>In addition to her fans, Gaga said her biggest influence to start the foundation is her own Mother Monster. "My mother really inspires me, because she talked about giving back ever since I was very, very young," she said. "And the more that I got to know my fans, the more that I realized that not everybody has that support system at home." </P><P> </P><P>Her mother later enthused that despite the snow outside, "It is even more beautiful inside because we are launching the foundation. The youth that is listening: you are the leaders of our future." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga also revealed another aspect of the foundation: "There is a bus now called the Born Brave Bus. So the Born Brave Bus is essentially a bus that is going to travel and follow my tour bus around the country, and it will welcome anyone from any walk of life to come and hang out and talk about love, acceptance, kindness and so forth. And the best thing about it it's going to be fun. It's going to essentially be a tailgate. This is not about saying, 'I need help,' but if you do, you can come. If you want to help someone else, you can come and say 'Hey, what's up?' " </P><P> </P><P>At the end of the day, Gaga said the foundation "is all about saying the power is in your hands. There really is sort of a focus on the victim, but what I want to point out today is that the victim and the bully are on the same playing field. How do we say, 'You are both equal members of society'? How do we not save not just the victim, but also the bully? I want the <i>Born This Way</i> Foundation to empower the youth of the world." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga further explained that one of the core values is teaching her fans to empower themselves to be "brave." </P><P> </P><P>"This, again, is not focused on bullying, the bravery aspect; I want for young people to know they have the power," she said. "How can we inspire young people to know they have the power to be brave?"</p>

'Dark Shadows' Trailer Divides Fans

Our columnist defends Tim Burton's comedic re-imagining of the vampire soap.
By John Mitchell

The first trailer for Tim Burton's big-screen adaptation of the late-'60s/ early-'70s vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows" dropped Thursday, and it has sharply divided fans.

In one corner are "Shadows" purists, who seem none too pleased with the director's decision to re-imagine the campy but deadly serious soap as a gonzo comedy. In the other corner are more casual fans and Burton enthusiasts, who are seeing shades of "Beetlejuice" and "Edward Scissorhands" and loving it.

I'm on the record as falling in the latter category. I grew up on reruns of the original soap (yeah, I was a weird kid) and also loved NBC's short-lived prime-time reboot in the early '90s. If the original series was a true-to-genre soap opera (just, you know, with a heavier lean on the supernatural), the '90s take was "Melrose Place"-meets-"Twin Peaks" but with fangs. The problem is, a straight take on the original (which is where Burton's loyalties lie — he's never given any indication he cares about the TV reboot) wouldn't fly with today's sophisticated film audience, and playing to the '90s retread would have resulted in a film that would have a lot in common with Neil Jordan's "Interview With the Vampire." And while that's certainly not a bad thing — "Interview" is a killer vampire flick — it has nothing to do with Tim Burton.

For its '90s return, "Shadows" turned up the sex factor; it was a sudsy drama with a chest-baring Ben Cross as Barnabas, Angelique busting out of her corset and a plot that focused heavily on Barnabas' attempts to cure his vampirism so he could bring the sexytimes with Victoria Winters, whom he suspected may have been the reincarnation of Josette DuPres, the love of his mortal life back in the late 18th century.

That's all well and good, and a big-screen treatment of that might have even played well. But that was never going to happen with Burton at the helm; it's not his game. The dark and spooky aesthetic he created for films like "Sleepy Hollow" and "Sweeney Todd" had the look fans of the series were after, and I think that — mixed with Burton's fanboy enthusiasm for the project — is why purists were so psyched that he was directing. But Burton doesn't really do romance, particularly not lusty, forbidden love stories.

'Dark Shadows' Trailer: Love It Or Hate It? (Poll)

There are several directors who do, and who do it well, including "Shadows" star Michelle Pfeiffer's frequent collaborator Stephen Frears ("Dangerous Liaisons," "Cheri," "Mary Reilly") and "Interview" director Jordan ("The End of the Affair," "The Crying Game"). Joe Wright ("Atonement," "Pride and Prejudice," the upcoming "Anna Karenina") has practically built his career on the stuff.

But I suspect they wouldn't have been able to grasp the weirdo wonderment that makes "Shadows" so special to fans. It's based on a soap, after all, and is so over-the-top that to direct it as a straight romantic vampire drama might have meant significant alterations to the story to "normalize" it. It would have had to be boiled down to the basics. That still might have made for a good film, but (real talk) it also might have meant that something really dynamic would be translated into a highbrow, slightly more horror-leaning version of "Twilight." And, um, no one wants that.

On the flip side, if Burton had kept the deliberately exaggerated and theatrical style of the original without acknowledging the comedy inherent in going so over-the-top (this is the literal definition of "camp"), it would have been unwatchably ridiculous. Soaps are absurd but play their ridiculousness with the utmost seriousness. It's something we all know and accept about them, but it's not something that would work, not even for a second, on the big screen — particularly in a big-budget film starring two three-time Oscar nominees (Johnny Depp and Pfeiffer), the twice-nominated Helena Bonham Carter and "Little Children" nominee Jackie Earle Haley.

The only thing left for Burton to do was turn the volume up even higher and trust his talented actors to work their magic with what better be a damn clever script. It's hard to embrace absurdity without it coming across as farce, but you know who is a master of doing exactly that? Tim Burton. He did it in "Beetlejuice" and "Edward Scissorhands." He even brought some genuine emotion to it with the more delicate "Ed Wood."

It's been a while since Burton worked this particular magic, but after seeing the "Shadows" trailer I'm feeling like he may have done it again.

Lil Kim Details Puff Daddy Run In With Jodeci

By Rob Markman
In the 1990s, there was no R&B band quite like Jodeci. While Boyz II Men, with their clean-cut image, were cut from a more traditional R&B cloth, K-Ci, JoJo, Dalvin and DeVante were the bad boys of the genre. No wonder they fit in so well with rappers, collaborating with the likes of [...]

Celebrity Breakups: Heidi Klum & Seal Divorce

Heidi Klum and Seal

They've shared one of the most passionate unions in Tinseltown, so it comes as sad and surprising news that Heidi Klum is getting divorced from husband Seal. Seal was the special guest during Monday's (January 23) taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show". With the episode set to air later this week, the 48-year-old British singer opened up about ending his marriage with wife of six and a half years, Heidi Klum, telling, ?I think we were shocked. You go into these things with the greatest intentions when you say ?I do? and you say ?til death do us part.? Those vows hold value. They are not just words? You try and you work through it and the thing that you quickly realize when you are married and you become a parent you do the best that you can." "It makes you actually appreciate your parents a lot more. The thing that I?m most proud about this great woman who married (and I really do mean that from the bottom of my heart), is that together she has given me four incredible gifts?four beautiful children [Leni, Henry, Johan, and Lou]. She still, in my opinion, the most wonderful woman in the world. I think our priority was to remain civil and do this thing with dignity. We still very much love each other,? Seal, who also performed ?Let?s Stay Together? for the daytime talk show, added. ?To say that neither of us were grieving would be an out and out lie (and I don?t mind telling you that). I think the operative here is that we are civil to each other and we both have a tremendous amount of respect and love and we try and do this with as much dignity as we possibly can.? Meanwhile, the "Kiss From a Rose" singer also commented on the fact that he was still sporting his wedding band, as he explained, ?Yes, I am still wearing my ring. I think it?s just pretty much a token of how I feel about this woman. We have eight years. Eight wonderful years together. Just because we have decided to separate doesn?t necessarily mean you take off your ring and you?re no longer connected to that person. We will be connected in many ways ?til the rest of our lives?. though our children and also through this tremendous admiration, respect and love that we have for each other. Will we wear the ring for the rest of our lives? Who knows? But right now it feels really comfortable on my hand so I have intentions of taking it off anytime soon.? [gallery=811]Heidi Klum and Seal

Lil Wayne Brings His YMCMB Family To SXSW

Mystikal, Birdman, Cory Gunz and others help Weezy kick off his Mountain Dew partnership in Austin.

YMCMB. Trukfit. DeWeezy. And repeat. When Lil Wayne took over the Austin Music Hall for his SXSW show in Texas on Thursday night, the rapper-turned-skateboarder had the venue draped in banners upon banners, shouting out his team, his new clothing line and his new partnership with Mountain Dew.

Earlier in the day, Wayne invited his pro skateboard friends — including Paul Rodriguez and Theotis Beasley — to get their grind on on the top floor of the venue while the Mountain Dew-sponsored show was being prepped. By showtime later that night, the boys were all freshly prepped for their closing appearance at the concert.

(For photos from the concert, click here.)

And while Wayne saved his skateboard family to wrap the night, his YMCMB family members came out to open the show and made brief appearances throughout his set. U.K. singer Jay Sean hit the stage early, along with Lil Chuckee and recent Cash Money signee Mystikal, who gave the crowd a taste of his hits including "Here I Go" and "Shake Ya Ass."

Wayne finally hit the stage around 12:30 a.m., decked out in his Trukfit gear, with skateboard in hand, bringing a burst of energy for fans who'd already started a few "Weezy" chants in anticipation of his performance. He kicked things off with "I'm Goin' In" and "A Milli," with head banging and dreads flying everywhere.

During his one-hour set, Wayne gave the crowd some words of inspiration on falling and getting back up. "Life is like skateboarding," he said. He later dropped another one-liner, "It's not what you do, it's how you do it," admitting to the crowd that they'd just participated in a commercial shoot for his new DeWeezy campaign with Mountain Dew.

With that out of the way, there were still plenty of hits left to go around, including "She Will" and "Blunt Blowin'," plus a few more guest appearances. Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga were all noticeably absent from the show, but after giving them a shout-out, Wayne brought out a few more YMCMB members including Shanell, Bow Wow, Gudda Gudda, Mack Maine and Birdman, who performed his single "Y.U. Mad."

Despite Drake's absence, Wayne delivered his verse on "The Motto" and saved Tha Carter IV single "6 Foot, 7 Foot" for the finale. Maybe the most surprising cameo of the night came from rapper Cory Gunz, who was recently arrested for gun possession. The young Gunz joined Wayne and his crew of pro skateboarders onstage to assist on the track before calling it a night.
